Netball SA is exploring a range of options for its Southern Force athletes after Netball Australia confirmed the 2021 Australian Netball Championships (ANC) will now be played in a decentralised format.
The championships, which were due to be played from 13 – 19 September, will not go ahead in Traralgon, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to present significant challenges for sport.
Netball Australia, state and territory member organisations, and Suncorp Super Netball clubs will work together to deliver localised opportunities, and where possible to be in line with the original September dates, in continuing to enable high-performance progression of athletes, coaches, umpires and officials in a coronavirus impacted environment.
An ANC winner will not be declared for 2021, with more details on the decentralised program to be communicated once confirmed.
Southern Force High Performance Manager Pitre Bourdon said Netball SA was looking at a range of options to get the side on court.
“Our athletes have been working really hard and we’ve been impressed with their progress.” Mr Bourdon said.
“It’s disappointing the Championships cannot go ahead in the planned format but we are exploring alternative options now.
“We will work closely with our athletes and staff to determine the best option for all.”
Netball Australia has advised it will work with the state and territory member organisations, Suncorp Super Netball clubs and the Latrobe City Council to re-design the competition opportunity for 2022.
Netball Australia Executive General Manager Performance, Stacey West, thanked the Latrobe City Council for their support in the decision-making process and for the operational planning work done to date.
“As a result of government restrictions, the unpredictability of snap border closures and state lockdowns, the delivery of a centralised tournament in Victoria is no longer a viable option,” West said.
“This new model will enable opportunities in a covid impacted environment, for the ongoing development of athletes, coaches, umpires, and officials in their progression through the high-performance pathway.
“We’d like to thank our event delivery partner the Latrobe City Council for their understanding and ongoing support.”
