Growing the game for all

The Rubies program provides athletes with the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence within a State team representative environment. The program brings together some of South Australia’s leading players with an intellectual disability, creating a supportive and challenging environment that encourages both personal and athletic growth.

Throughout the season, the travelling squad and reserve players train together on a weekly basis, participating in a structured program focused on skill development, game understanding, physical preparation, teamwork, and athlete wellbeing. Reserve players are an integral part of the program, training alongside the travelling squad throughout the season and contributing to the environment while remaining ready to step into the travelling team if required.

The program works towards the Marie Little Shield, Netball Australia’s national championship for women with an intellectual disability. In 2026, the Marie Little Shield will be held at Thornbury’s Narrandjeri Stadium in partnership with Visit Victoria from 4-6 September, bringing together teams from across Australia to compete and celebrate inclusion, excellence, and the spirit of netball.

The Rubies program is committed to providing athletes with meaningful development opportunities, fostering confidence, independence, and teamwork, while supporting athletes to represent South Australia with pride on the national stage.
