One of Netball SA’s greatest dynasties, the 1979-1983 South Australian State Team were honoured this month as inductees into the SA Sport Hall of Fame.
The teams earnt the recognition for their five back-to-back titles at the All Australia Netball Tournament, where they put South Australian netball on the map.
Over 40 years later, players and coaches were celebrated at a gala event on February 21 as they were officially inducted into the SA Sport Hall of Fame.
“South Australian netball has always punched above its weight on the national stage, and we have our past athletes and coaches to thank for setting the tone,” Ms Klei said.
“Our state teams have experienced great success in the modern era and the 1979-83 State Teams paved the way for our current generations of stars.
“Securing five back-to-back titles is almost unheard of and something SA netball is incredibly proud of.
“These teams are incredibly deserving of this honour, and I would like to congratulate them on behalf of our entire netball community.”
Among the celebration athletes and coaches were Monica Lahm, Kay Partington, Dianne Eckert, Bronwyn Roberts, and Margaret Angove OAM.
Roberts, Lahm, Partington and Eckert all represented the Australian Diamonds on the national stage, along with teammates Vicky Hastings, Julie Francou, Sharon Burton, Marilyn Blyth
Angove went on to be the inaugural coach the Adelaide Thunderbirds, winning two premierships in 1998 and 1999, and received the Order of Australia for her services to netball.
