Wendy started her involvement in the competition with the association back in 1969 as an U16s coach. She continued coaching for the next 13 years in various grades and has not missed a Country Championships since! Wendy’s memories take her back to playing in rain, mud and shine, and riding the highs and lows of competition successes as well as disappointments.
“Netball is a big passion of mine and has continued to be as the years have gone by,” said Wendy.
“What I love most about the Country Championships is that it is a big challenge for the players and helps their development.
“Every year is different, and it creates lots of memories.
Wendy says she has always had such a passion for it and can’t imagine when that would end.
“Every year I think maybe this is my last year, but then I can’t miss it!
“Seeing the girls travel to Adelaide to play is such a great opportunity.”
Club secretory, Helen Roberts, says Wendy is a vital part of their netball community.
“Wendy is an integral member of our Riverland Netball Association Executive Committee as our Patroness and Netball SA Delegate.
“She continues to be involved in our Country Champs Committee as our Uniform Co-ordinator and all-round Country Champs guru!
“You may have seen her arriving extra early each morning of the June long weekend to secure the Riverland squad a prime position for our home base.
“Wendy loves watching young players develop their skills and sees the competition as a great opportunity to pit their talents against the best of country SA.
Wearing one of her many hats, Wendy is also the club’s Publicity Officer. And has weekly segment on the Riverland’s local radio station, which she first began doing 1969, giving her another opportunity to support the sport she loves.
Wendy was also instrumental in introducing the broadcast of netball to local television, seeking sponsorship to support this.
“I hope that some of the things I’ve helped introduce into the Riverland will help encourage girls to play the sport.”
