The Western Districts Netball Club (WDNC) on Kangaroo Island is set to benefit from a $1 million funding boost after its clubrooms were destroyed by the recent devastating bushfires.
The funding announcement came off the back of a visit to KI by CEOs and staff from Netball SA, SANFL, SACA and Tennis SA to meet with the local community and discuss plans to rebuild.
These discussions provided the organisations with an understanding of the community’s priorities to ensure that any future assistance provided was suitable.
Earlier this month, the South Australian Government partnered with Cricket Australia and the AFL to help fund a new temporary facility for the Western Districts Community Sports Club – the place WDNC calls home.
The facility will be an Ausco modular build that can be installed quickly, meaning the club will be able to focus on investing its insurance money in a new community facility down the track.
WDNC President Maree Gifford said the temporary facility would give her community a place of solace when sport recommences.
“We basically lost everything except our two courts,” Gifford said.
“Our gear, our changerooms, our records, everything… we had two small sheds left.
“A lot of our members lost their homes too so to have a place they can go to socialise will be so important once things start up again.”
