South Australia Sport Institute
Developing and supporting athletes with the potential to perform at the highest national and international levels of sport
The South Australia Sports Institute (SASI) caters for the development and support of South Australian athletes currently or identified as capable of progressing along the netball pathway.
The program aims to provide world class coaching, training, competition, facilities and support services to improve the athlete’s competitive performance.
Athletes will be eligible for inclusion into the SASI Netball Program based on their performance relative to selection criteria for one of the scholarship categories.
National Training Centre Program
The SASI Netball Program is a partnership program funded and supported by the South Australian government through SASI in partnership with both national and state sporting organisations. Netball Australia are a key partner in the program and contribute funding support to the program as part of its National High Performance Plan. The NTC endorsement of the program recognises the status of the program in the sports National High Performance Pathway and also the indirect funding contribution to the SASI program by the Australian Sports Commission through Netball Australia.
Program Key Objectives:
• For the SASI program to generate athletes who are capable of delivering skills consistently under pressure in a seamless transition through the pathway to AIS, Australia Talent Squads, Deakin University Netball League (DUANL) and Suncorp Super Netball Competition (SSN)
• For the SASI full scholarship holders to satisfy the criteria of ‘has genuine potential” to play for the National 21 & Under Team / Diamonds / ANL and SSN rather than have an age limitation
• For the SASI program to utilise all available funding to produce a ‘best practice’ program incorporating the full suite of institute services individually tailored to each full scholarship holder working towards touring and SSN match preparation simulation
• For the SASI Program to align more closely with the Adelaide Thunderbirds senior program and have many opportunities to immerse athletes across the programs
• For the SASI program to provide the base of talent for the DUANL Program, the underpinning program for SSN s so that training can take place all year round, and give better weighting to the priority of DUANL
• For the SASI coaching program to foster positive “dual care” relationships with partner coaches of athletes participating in Premier League
In 2019, SASI Athletes Maisie Nankivell, Chelsea Blackman, Tayla Williams, Nyah Allen and Georgie Horjus moved into the Adelaide Thunderbirds training environment.
Following South Australia winning both the 17/U and 19/U National Championships, eight 17/U athletes and seven 19/U athletes were nationally identified
respectively. These athletes all attended the Centre of Excellence during July 2019 and received expert coaching and development opportunities.
Sarah Klau and Maddy Turner, both former SASI athletes, made their debut for the Diamonds in 2019.
