What is the Coloured Shirt Program?

The Office of Recreation and Sport in association with Netball SA utilise an initiative where new or inexperienced officials wear a coloured shirt that makes them easily recognisable to players and spectators. The primary objective of this program is to assist everyone involved in Netball to identify and support new officials.

The program provides support and development aimed at progressing the new officials to toward a National C Badge and also focusses on retaining these new officials as umpires for years to come.

The Coloured Shirt Program does not come at a cost to Associations or Clubs.

Who can participate in the Coloured Shirt Program?

Anyone! But you must have:

  • Less than two years umpiring experience;
  • Be unbadged;
  • Be willing to complete the Rules of Netball Theory Exam (pass mark of 70% or more);
  • Be willing to complete the Foundation Umpire Education Course; and
  • Be a Registered Member of Netball SA.

Who can be a Coloured Shirt Mentor:

Individuals who are experienced umpires are able to mentor Coloured Shirt Umpires. This may mean they have umpired for several years of obtain a National C Badge or higher.

Coloured Shirt Mentors must maintain the following:

  • A current DHS (Department of Human Services) Screening or be willing to attain one;
  • Current Rules of Netball Theory Exam (pass mark of 70% or more);
  • Current Foundation Umpire Education Course;
  • Current Member of Netball SA.

Why run the Coloured Shirt Program?

The Coloured Shirt Program acts as a step along the Netball SA Umpire Pathway. The program aims to teach new and beginner umpires through practical and theoretical sessions to develop their knowledge and skills in umpiring.

  • Easily recognisable shirts for the Players, Coaches and Spectators to see;
  • New and Beginner Umpires receive support from a Mentor at training and matches; and
  • Access to Netball SA supplied Resources to assist with the learning of the Umpires.
