Meet Molly Watson… 17U South Australian vice-captain

Ahead of the National Netball Championships being held at Priceline Stadium in mid-April, we caught up with Molly Watson, the vice-captain of the South Australian 17U team to chat about the Championships and her netball journey to date.

How is training going for the 17U South Australian team?

Training is going really well. We’re working hard and always looking to improve. The team has gelled really well and are making good connections on and off the court.

What was your reaction when you were named vice-captain?

At first, I was surprised, but then I felt excited because I can be a role model for my teammates. It’s also nice to think that they see me as a leader.

What are you looking forward to about Nationals?

I’m excited to get more court time than I did at the 2017 Nationals Netball Championships and to see how far we can go as a team.

What is your earliest memory of playing netball?

My earliest memory of playing netball was in 12U Juniors playing for Nangwarry, in the south east about 15 minutes from Mount Gambier. I remember not knowing much about netball and playing goal shooter, but the ball never came down my end, so I ended up sitting on the court!

Then when I was in U15s, our team didn’t have a defender and I was asked to play defence and I haven’t looked back.

At the start of this year you moved to Adelaide and are now boarding at Scotch College and studying Year 11. Before you moved to the city, how often did you drive to Adelaide for netball training and games?

Straight after school on Fridays my mum and I would drive from Mount Gambier, and that night I would sometimes fill in for the Garville Reserves team. On Saturday, I’d play for Garville in the Intermediate 1 team. We would stay in Adelaide on Monday so I could train with the Inters 1 at night and then early on a Tuesday morning we would drive back to Mount Gambier, so I would make it to school on time!

Where would you like to see your netball career go?

I’m striving to make it to the national league. It would be great to play at that level.

Who is your favourite player and why?

Geva Mentor from Sunshine Coast Lightning. She reads the play so well and is a smart netballer.
