Deb Green is in her second year of being a Bench Official and achieved her National Accreditation in mid-June.
A National Accreditation means Deb can now bench officiate at national level netball events.
Netball SA caught up with Deb to hear about her role as a Bench Official.
How did you get involved in becoming a Bench Official?
I was encouraged to have a go by the staff at Netball SA.
What do you like about being a Bench Official?
It’s the BEST seat in the house! I enjoy all aspects of netball and being a Bench Official is about giving back. I enjoy the people who have trained me and the people I work with. We are a team and we have fun too!
How did you feel in the lead up to being tested for your National Accreditation?
I was nervous, but the team of bench managers are the most considerate and encouraging people. They calmed me down and told me ’just do It’. They have taught me well!
Do you want to take your bench officiating further (i.e. Officiate SSN, Commonwealth Games etc.)? If so, what is your goal?
My short-term goal is to continue to work through the ranks of Netball SA Premier League and Reserves and the Deakin University Australian Netball League. My medium-term goal is to officiate at SSN and my long-term goal is the Commonwealth Games.
Would you recommend becoming a Bench Official?
Yes! It’s the best seat in the house. The teams and umpires treat you with respect and we also ensure that accurate statistics are provided, while having fun. I would recommend becoming a Bench Official as it’s a way to give back to netball, keep learning and have fun.
