The leadership roles for the 17U State Team have been announced with Lucy Austin named as captain, and Molly Watson as vice-captain.
Lucy, who plays goal shooter, said when the captaincy was announced in late February she was surprised and really stoked.
“This is the second year I’ve been in the 17U team. In 2017 I was one of the younger players so I didn’t nominate to be captain,” she said.
“Now I’m one of the older players and I put my hand up for the role.
“I’m looking forward to the role as I get to lead by example on and off the court, be the voice of the team, represent the team in the best possible way and form strong bonds with the players and coaches.”
With the Underage National Netball Championships being held at Adelaide’s Priceline Stadium from Tuesday 17 April to Sunday 22 April, Lucy said they’re fast approaching and it’s exciting.
“The Championships are definitely coming up quickly.
“I’m really excited to play in Adelaide because it will be great to play in front of a home crowd – we’re going to have the most supporters in the stands.”
The team is currently training every Sunday in the lead up to the Nationals, and coach Lee-Anne Cummins said the team is tracking well.
“In our match play the players have implemented what we’ve been teaching at training,” she said.
“They’re really receptive to feedback and are always looking at ways to improve.”
Lee-Anne said both Lucy and Molly had shown they have a great understanding of what it means to be in leaderships roles and learnt important leadership qualities from being in the 17U team in 2017.
The selection process for captaincy included the player nominating captain, presenting to the team and being interviewed by the coaching staff.
